Budget Beauty Buys: Have Your Beauty Without Breaking the Bank

Going to high-end department stores can be a fun experience to try out new beauty products, but often the only component that sets these products apart from their less expensive drug store options is fancy packaging. Sometimes it can actually be more cost-effective to buy high-end products, because the quality is so good that you’ll use the whole bottle instead of purchasing an inexpensive item, using a bit of it, and becoming frustrated at its lack of quality. Within a beauty routine, it’s important to save money where you can, so you can those savings and invest them elsewhere, like high-quality lashes, facials, and even virgin Indian hair extensions.

As a general rule, it’s best to spend more money on foundational elements to your makeup regimen, such as good skin care products to keep your skin clean and clear. Also, your foundation should be a good enough quality that it protects your skin rather than causing breakouts. Drugstore mascaras are often just as good as their high-end counterparts. Select a type of mascara that doesn’t clump and has a full brush. You may want to do a few internet searches to determine which one won’t smear off throughout the day and put unsightly black marks under your eyes. You can follow the same general rules for eyeliner. Drugstore makeup removers are typically just as effective as the more expensive options. Or, you can use baby oil to remove makeup and mascara and rejuvenate your skin.
If you’d like to experiment with different eye shadow colors, drugstore makeup should also do the trick. For neutral colors that you wear on a frequent basis, it might be worth it to invest in some higher quality products that stay put and last all day. For makeup you wear less frequently, or to experiment with trends, purchasing a less expensive color pallet will do the trick. The same rule can apply to blush and lipstick or gloss. For gloss, you can often get the same effect from a drugstore shade if you put on a coat of chapstick before applying. It will preserve the moisture and feel of a more expensive option without draining your bank account.
Often drugstores will let you return products if you are unsatisfied, so don’t be afraid to try out some drugstore options -- just make sure you’re aware of the store’s return policy.
